i have used hal for years since i am blind my self and have been from birth. i have since got 9 gcse's, a distinction in the btec introductery deploma in ict, and 4 distinctions and 1 merit in the ict technitions course. both were tort at colchester institute, the local college. i am 18 years of age and dolphin hal has helped me through 11 years of lerning. during this time i have sped the speech up to 700 wpm, as the orpheus synthesiser is verry clear and pronounces words and letters perfectly and clearly. 2 other lesser quality synthesisers provided with sam are eloquence and scansoft realspeak. realspeak may sound high quality, but it's core driver does not allow for the hdr components to decompress code, use msaa to get info about things on screen and output them without loosing chunks of memory along the way, so you can't do mutch stremuous work with it. eloquence has pronunciation difficulties.

dolphin hal is verry good for people who are blind and need a screen reader. it costs a lot of money but it is a top quality product that encorperates to additional programs, orpheus and sam. sam must be installed to manage synthesisers and braille displays, and orpheus can be installed to provide speech output via the sound card. orpheus is managed by the synthesiser access manager - sam component, and sam also supports microsoft sapi4 and sapi5 tts engines.
